There's actually nothing wrong with purchasing captive bred axolotls. They've been used as experimental animals for probably a century now and are widely available. However, the loss of the original, wild founder populations should be considered a tragedy and money needs to be raised to create habitat that is free of non-native fish. Treehugger unfortunately neglected to give out any information about how this could be accomplished. contact Sapo Gordo Ecological Restoration Services at sapogordoeco@comcast.net
For more info if you're interested.

Re: Ubercool \"Mexican walking fish\" Nearing Extinction

No offense, but if you want to save something because of its cuteness, there is something seriously wrong with your mentality.

We should not save animals because of how they look. Besides, there are plenty of other cute animals that are in danger too! Some of them being much more intelligent (dolphins and pigs, for example). When do you ever think about those animals?

My point is that we should favor intelligence over "cute" factor. And even if you did want to save these critters, how is adopting one going to save them? You won't be saving them unless you're breeding them, or you actually go out and make changes yourself.

Re: Ubercool \"Mexican walking fish\" Nearing Extinction

I wish I could save all the endangered species!
