But you've said nothing about its use in my shampoo or toothpaste.

I use it on my face instead of lotion. It actually works to clear up zits because of the acid in it.

I've been purchasing coconut oil for several years now - I first learned about it on Dr. Mercola's site www.mercola.com. He now recommends a diff. brand than he used to, but I still love the first brand which you can learn about & buy at www.tropicaltraditions.com. They are a really great company that treat their farmers very well and work environmentally as well. I love the oil and use it for/in everything! I add a small tablespoon to my bowls of soup, use it for cooking and baking, and I use it as lotion, and immediately put in on my skin when I cut myself. It keeps infections from happening. The only other oil I use is olive oil and I only use that on my salads (I don't cook with it). The Tropical Traditions coconut oil does not have a coconut oil taste so it works well in just about everything. They also sell un-sweetened coconut flakes which I use to make my own trail mix. The Tropical Traditions site has a lot of great info on the health benefits as does Mercola's site - Mercola also has a lot of info about the smear campaign that made coconut oil so unpopular. Highly recommend! Oh yeah, I also put a little bit of coconut oil in a small dish next to my cats food and they'll eat it when they need it. Sometimes they won't touch it for a little while, but then they'll eat it all right up. There is some info online about the health benefits of coconut oil for pets. But for pets or people, the important thing to know is that all coconut oil is not created equal. Read up on Mercola.com. (I'm not affiliated with either company in any way).

"(The molecules in hydrogenated oil are unnaturally small, and can easily slip into places they shouldn’t go, like arteries)"

Ack! That's why homogenization of milk is bad for you! It's a totally different thing than hydrogenating oil! The problem with partially-hydrogenated oil is that it creates trans fats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat</p>

Another random Coconut Oil fun fact:

You can mix 3 parts beeswax to 1 part Coconut oil to make your own organic surfboard wax.

I met the 'coconut king' in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. He was 67 at the time and still climbing up 200ft palm trees as part of his show - so a diet of coconut has clearly done him no harm.

He also showed us how to make candles from coconuts, and plates and shoes from palm fronds - how's that for true treehugger living!

Thanks for the cocounet oil info! I always assumed all palm oils were really bad for you, so I'll have to read up on this more.

Lulu LaMe is absolutely right, hydrogenation of oils does not make the molecule any smaller. What it does however is convert it from a cis to a trans configuration (for you organic chem people). The physical difference in molecule shape allows trans configured molecules to stack more easily, leading to things like clogged arteries.

I researched about coconut oil once for my work. Philippine is one of the biggest country that exports coconut oil to abroad. Since their amount of exportation is getting bigger every year, they started having a "coconut oil department" in their government. I also remember that my Indian friend always use coconut oil for her long beautiful care. She told me that is a tradition way to keep their hair healthy in India. I also learned that coconut oil is a great moisturizer in winter, and good diet oil for cooking. What a oil!

Like any other plant oil, properties may depend on species (variety) and tissue from which the oil is extracted.

It is the best dairy alternative, especially to replace butter. And coconut milks replace dairy milk.

I didn't realize so many people still think it's bad for you. Shows how well marketing works.
