If the tesla was pushed under an 18 wheeler trailer, it would more than likely slide under the trailer and keep on going. The prius would get the worst of it. The Tesla appears to need suspension, a new PEM and motor/rear drivetrain and be on its way.

And then ended up under the seemingly undamaged van...thank his luck it was not under an 18 wheeler rig. Just how do you get under a vehicle without upturning it? anyway?? They put a spatula on the tesla front end?

You keepp prasing the impact resistance of the Tesla, but the guy admits the pop top could have been a bit sturdier. 2 dimensional minds at work...

Sports cars particularly tend to get pushed under other vehicles in this type of accident. In every one I've ever seen, the damage was pretty much the same - a little to the front, rear and roof, and a broken windshield. I've never heard of anyone being injured from such an accident beyond minor cuts from the shower of glass. So there is nothing unique about this case. The only thing that makes this interesting is that the coincidence of it involving a Prius, a Tesla, and a VW.

Green news: Tesla Roadster is a pioneer electric car; also tiny. In a recent huge car crash, the driver of the tiny electric car escaped without serious harm. This helps defuse the argument that small electric cars are bad because they are unsafe.

The real measure of crashes is bodily injuries, or lack thereof. Who cares what a ruined car looks like. Its going to the crusher anyhow. The more smashed up it looks, the better it may have done in protecting the occupants.

I think puzzled makes a great point.

On top of that I would add that, out of these 3 vehicles, the Tesla and the SUV usually pose more of a danger to cyclists, pedestrians, and other more vulnerable road users, than the Prius. Maybe not in every case (including this one), but in general cars that are oversized or designed to be driven fast increase the danger on our roadways regardless of the amount of energy that they consume.

While the Tesla looks a lot like a Lotus, so much has been changed that I think the credit should go to both teams. Elon Musk has said in various interviews that up to 90% of the parts were new. The whole body is carbon fiber, the whole drivetrain has been changed, etc..

That's...a really ironic mash-up. I think there is something to be said for small cars; a few months ago I ended up pinned under the trailer of an 18 wheeler in a Mazda Miata. The rescue crew said that, had I been in any other sort of vehicle, I would be dead (the top of the car was shorn off in the accident and they had to cut the side of the car off to extract me). I don't know that this comments one way or the other concerning SUVs; however, I think it's at least a positive note concerning small cars (for those times when one finds oneself in the undercarriage of a cargo trailer).

Having lived in Denmark this sort of thing is not that uncommon. Danish drivers have a very bad habit of driving right behind each other, even at high speed. The news would often report multi car pile ups.

I don't know if that was meant to be a joke...but the Tesla is designed like a F1 car...in case of a accident, special zones in the car "explode" to reduce the amount of force applied to the passenger compartment. The fact that the back and front of the Tesla look like that just means that the system worked well.
