TreeHugger.com: Tesla Rear-Ended by Prius in Denmark, Pushed Under SUV

    Whoa!
  • Jikki · 1 month ago
Those crazy Prius drivers, still clinging to fossil fuels and their bad habits of rear-ending competing technologies.

Not not really. It is just slightly ironic that it was a Prius (and they must've been REALLY distracted to hit a motorcycle *and* the tesla), but when you think about it there aren't a whole lot of electric cars or SUVs for the tesla to have been in an accident with.

It does show a lot about tesla's crash safety though. Nice job on that guys.
  • iLoveWalesTheyTasteGreat · 1 month ago
The crash worthiness of the Tesla has little to do with the Tesla design team, the owner should be thanking Lotus.
  • Name · 1 month ago
While the Tesla looks a lot like a Lotus, so much has been changed that I think the credit should go to both teams. Elon Musk has said in various interviews that up to 90% of the parts were new. The whole body is carbon fiber, the whole drivetrain has been changed, etc..

Notice that while the other two vehicles are obviously total write-offs, the SUV appears to be almost completely undamaged. In fact, it looks like the SUV could simply drive itself from on top of the Tesla and go on it's merry way.

Now which of these vehicles is better for the environment?
  • Name · 1 month ago
Yeah but since the Tesla was pushed UNDER the SUV you wouldn't see the damage anyway - it may actually be in the LEAST drivable condition if enough stuff got ripped up on the undercarriage (axle or drive shaft for example). Using your example maybe a tank would be the best bet - at least that wouldn't have let some kind of wimpy electric vehicle lift it in the air....
  • JC · 1 month ago
I have no clue to whether the SUV is drivable or not, but I have seen many trucks and SUV's end up with issues from minor wrecks. The suspensions can only take so much damage, and might not immediately break, or can be only bent and result in bad handling and tire wear.

Drivable doesn't mean undamaged. Definitely worth having checked out if you end up in a crash, even one far less severe than this.

"Now which of these vehicles is better for the environment?"

The Tesla, then the Prius, then the SUV, in that order.
  • trunksy · 1 month ago
Did the person on the motorbike survive?
  • Name · 1 month ago
Apparently the motorbike driver was okay, the Prius driver was *DRUMROLL* speaking on a cellphone when this happened
  • Andreja · 1 month ago
greg, but it wasn't the SUV that got hit by the Prius. This whole thing is so sad.

"But the accident has convinced me that the Tesla is a very safe sports car."

Does anybody else find it funny that that is his idea of safe?
  • Name · 1 month ago
The Tesla was stopped, was rear-ended at high speed, was pushed under a SUV, and the guy just walked out.

That seems pretty safe to me.

Sports cars particularly tend to get pushed under other vehicles in this type of accident. In every one I've ever seen, the damage was pretty much the same - a little to the front, rear and roof, and a broken windshield. I've never heard of anyone being injured from such an accident beyond minor cuts from the shower of glass. So there is nothing unique about this case. The only thing that makes this interesting is that the coincidence of it involving a Prius, a Tesla, and a VW.

So a Dutchman buys an American car. Later, a Japanese car, a German car, and the American car get into an accident, and its newsworthy b/c of the American car.

    Radical.
  • Name · 1 month ago
Toyota is a Japanese based company.

so Dutchman buys a Japanese car.

All big car companies have global supply chains and factories all around the world.

Looks like the Prius did better than the Tesla - the back of that tesla is a total wreck, as if it exploded ;-)
  • hugoalves · 1 month ago
I don't know if that was meant to be a joke...but the Tesla is designed like a F1 car...in case of a accident, special zones in the car "explode" to reduce the amount of force applied to the passenger compartment. The fact that the back and front of the Tesla look like that just means that the system worked well.

Could someone explain me what is the "green" news here? Three cars crashed. The owner of the electric car (which is supposed to be green) then says he flies with his family to New York.
  • James@BicycleDesign · 1 month ago
I think puzzled makes a great point.

On top of that I would add that, out of these 3 vehicles, the Tesla and the SUV usually pose more of a danger to cyclists, pedestrians, and other more vulnerable road users, than the Prius. Maybe not in every case (including this one), but in general cars that are oversized or designed to be driven fast increase the danger on our roadways regardless of the amount of energy that they consume.

Green news: Tesla Roadster is a pioneer electric car; also tiny. In a recent huge car crash, the driver of the tiny electric car escaped without serious harm. This helps defuse the argument that small electric cars are bad because they are unsafe.
  • evileuropean · 1 month ago
Having lived in Denmark this sort of thing is not that uncommon. Danish drivers have a very bad habit of driving right behind each other, even at high speed. The news would often report multi car pile ups.

That's...a really ironic mash-up. I think there is something to be said for small cars; a few months ago I ended up pinned under the trailer of an 18 wheeler in a Mazda Miata. The rescue crew said that, had I been in any other sort of vehicle, I would be dead (the top of the car was shorn off in the accident and they had to cut the side of the car off to extract me). I don't know that this comments one way or the other concerning SUVs; however, I think it's at least a positive note concerning small cars (for those times when one finds oneself in the undercarriage of a cargo trailer).

    The full story here.

    ...and pictures here

"SUV comes on on top in crash". Alternative headline.

The real measure of crashes is bodily injuries, or lack thereof. Who cares what a ruined car looks like. Its going to the crusher anyhow. The more smashed up it looks, the better it may have done in protecting the occupants.

    what about the motorbike?
It should be Tesla, Prius / motorbike, then SUV :)
  • Mainchow · 1 month ago
Do you mean to say he borrowed, then Wrecked that car?
  • waltinseattle · 1 month ago
And then ended up under the seemingly undamaged van...thank his luck it was not under an 18 wheeler rig. Just how do you get under a vehicle without upturning it? anyway?? They put a spatula on the tesla front end?

You keepp prasing the impact resistance of the Tesla, but the guy admits the pop top could have been a bit sturdier. 2 dimensional minds at work...
  • Tim · 1 month ago
If the tesla was pushed under an 18 wheeler trailer, it would more than likely slide under the trailer and keep on going. The prius would get the worst of it. The Tesla appears to need suspension, a new PEM and motor/rear drivetrain and be on its way.

Hay cosas que no cambian en ningun lugar, pero ojala asi fuesen los accidentes en mi pais

glad he survived and the car considering actually stood up pretty good if the drive is able to walk away.

now the prius owner will really understand why eco cars are expensive.

tesla´s small fix will cost a little...

Asian Fact: the equalizer in all car arguements - soon they will drive the price of oil out of reach for average drivers, thus reducing the number of big iron piston engined machines on the roads to zero! A glorious day for all mankind! and an end to air pollution!
