TreeHugger.com: PARC Develops Low-Energy, Membrane-Free Water Filtration Technology

While I like this and it seems like a great idea ... I believe that the Australian water filter which uses clay, coffee grounds, manure and a match is a much better alternative for developing nations.

It's not only cheaper in basic material costs it also removes bacteria without alum and has specifically not been patented so it can be used without intellectual property costs.

    That's ingenious.

Hydrocotyle ranuculoides will do it, too, and will treat much larger volumes of water for much more modest inputs.

This is similar to the way in which dyson vacuum cleaners work - but its still ingenious.

How much energy would that use to spin it? centrifuges for things like cell disection spin at something around 6000 rpm (though I could be misinformed).
