Well, I have been working in Dubai several time and I was really surprised, how many small and environmental friendly cars appeared the last time. A few years ago it were just SUVs and such cars, but now it slowly changes. And I do think there is a slight rise of environmental friendly way of life. And concerning the solar energy: Sid you answered the question by yourself: there are sandstorms, so it is not that easy!!! Anyway I guess it´s always easy to say you yourself are aware of environmental issues if you grew up in a country where the law forces you to do so and even pre school tall you to seperate waste...

I have been a resident in Dubai for about 25 years now and my father also has spent most of his life here. (good or bad but think of this)

Sid, how many Green projects are there REALLY in Dubai ?

Isn't this one of the world's hottest deserts ?

How many Solar Power plants are here ?

How many Wind Power stations are in Dubai ? (deserts can get very windy - sand storms)

How much dust do you see from construction ? (I can't remember a day since last year visibility was like it was before the construction boom).

How many GREEN buildings really are there in Dubai ?

Eevn after the completion of the so called GREEN projects planned, how many really affect the society as a whole ? (makes you think aren't these just Gimicks)

Oh! and heres a question I've asked for the last 5 years:

WHERE ARE THE HYBRID / GREEN CARS ?!

Did you know it is illeagal to import anything Hybrid or Green in Dubai ? (well maybe not officially, it would look bad, so they just never pass the paper work, I tried believe me)

If they make so much money to spend in Billions for all this construction. How much of it do they reserve for environmental programs and GREEN initiatives.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE BEACHES!!!!!

Beaches were heaven in Dubai 10 years ago. It is a total wreck now. The sand feels like rubbish under my feet.

*most* of the people on this forum writing about gas prices, paying for gas while Dubai blows it all away on cooling sand, whats wrong with the arabs etc... they are all ignorant, good for absolutely NOTHING, pieces of rotting s**t. you know why?? well if you look at a map, and read up on the UAE,, you'll find that Dubai is a separate state-city. one of 7 in the country. Dubai has negligible reserves of oil. and not of very great quality. so it depends almost entirely on tourism. hence all the gimmicks.

then there's the point that the UAE as a whole is a huge donor of funds for peace missions.

there's also the point that the UAE is stating up green movements internally as well starting from buildings.

getting back to the previous posters, they have no clue of economics and politics of the area. hence they can be automatically be put into the category of head-up-their-butts hobos who'll squeal GREEN at the drop of a hat, and they think their unwiped arses are greener than the rest of the world...

they do not care about the environment anyway. They cut down the oil production only when the price needs to go back up to sustain their opulent lifestyles. Why do they build all those luxurious places? Becouse they can! If I was to decide what to do with the auto industry when they come to me begging for tenths of bilions, I would send them to the arab world for the money, becouse the cars will burn their oil, generating more wealth. But they do not join the party unless there is a profit.

I love it!!! Who cares about the environment not me? Anyways it’s not like were going to live forever might as well be as comfortable as possible wile were here. And I sure don’t care what the environmentalists have to say unless they live in the forest and walk every were they are damaging the environment to I.E. for all you blogers computers need power were do they think its coming from mother nature NOPE, cars/ public transportation also taking from the environment fossil fuels, bikes need to be built some how lets face it we really cared what the tree huggers had to say we would all have to move off the planet and make it a protected reserve.

Don't be so knee-jerk reactionary or the Republicans will think you are one of them. Dubai has the cutting edge in technology and is not stupid enough to just blow this money without looking into sustainable (and therefore long-term CHEAPER) alternatives. The swamp cooler idea and recycled seawater have I'm sure been reviewed in some form or another.

All of you "treehuggers" - not namecalling, just recalling the name of this site - really ought to spend your time on REAL environmental menaces, like the use of illegal Depleted Uranium weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan. But who cares about nuclear fallout, or the use of private jets by ivory-tower "green" celebrities, when you can complain about one lousy hotel in Dubai?

well, your all probably right. they don't need more hot water. oddly enough if I remember my physics they could use all that heat to cool the building.

using thermodynamics, they could utilize that heat to cool the building & the result would be to cool the fluid which would then be pumped back thru the beach to cool it off again.

I'm not a physicist so I don't understand how thermodynamics works. i do know that there is a scientist that has designed a refridgerator for use in third world countries. it uses no elecrictity and is powered by the heat of a campfire. seems like the same principals could be used here & now what seems like a frivolous idea would be a sustainable one.

Cool the sand so what... people can lay directly in 120 degree sunlight? Maybe they better try a patch first, see if slightly cooled sand does anything for people wanting the sun-facing side of their bodies to cook like an egg. Yeah, hot sand often can't even be walked on, granted. But maybe umbrellas and flip flops would be better. Alas, I'm afraid this is a ploy to lure rich people and if they could somehow turn down the sun, they wouldn't. It might attract commoners. If they could turn up the sun, so that they would need air conditioned sand, they would, so they could attract the Donald Trumps of the world who will spend more money on wining and dining, and on the novelty of a billion dollar AC system just for their toes. On the other hand, being the species that we are, I think it's "cool" that we can apply whatever the mind imagines, and sometimes that's enough reason to do it. Otherwise, heck, there may be no fun in being any different than a camel or a pig.

Do you people understand the drastic changes that this planet has gone through since its creation? Did it ever accrue to anyone that we are at the end of an Ice Age? What caused the Ice Age in the first place? Must have been extremely clean air.
